My brother, Steve, called me late this afternoon to tell me that he got bit by a gray fox. He and Grace had just gotten to his house and when he went to walk in the back door to the porch and the fox was on the porch eating the cat's food. Steve thought it was friendly but all of a sudden it attacked him and bit his ankle and leg. When Steve went outside the fox chased him and Steve had to run fast and he grabbed his bike to put it between he and the fox. The fox then attacked the tires on the bike. The fox also was limping and had a wobbly hip. Steve thought maybe it had got hit by a car. But it never would have attacked him like that and especially chase him. The fox hid under the front porch. Steve said he could smell it. It was probably a male that had left his scent everywhere. Steve's cats were there also but the fox didn't attack them.
Grace called 911 and it took quite a while and then finally a trooper that was a DEC guy came with his rifle. Steve got down off the porch at that time and the fox came running out to attack him again and that is when the trooper shot it. Steve said he only shot once and he died instantly. They shoot them in the lungs so they can send the head away to see if it has rabies.
I kept telling Steve to clean the bite but he never did for two hours. That was real stupid of him I'd say. That would be the very first thing I'd do.
They will have the results by Thursday. The DEC guy told him he should go to Urgent Care to at least get that wound cleaned up and he might need a tetanus shot but Steve said he wasn't going to go and would wait till Thursday. Rabies is nothing to mess with. He should know better! If it comes back positive then Steve will have to get the first shot right away and then three more after that. I heard they can be painful too.
I sure hope that fox was not rabid. Then Steve won't have to go through those shots. But he does have to worry about infection from the bite. I told him to get some Iodine so I think he was going to go to the drug store and get some. And he finally did wash the wounds with soap and water.
He says he wished he had that on video with him running around his yard with the fox after him.. I think Grace took one picture after it was shot. She was too scared to come out of the house and I don't blame her.
So that is the news for today!
I went out this evening to get a few things at Walmart. Got home at 9:15 pm. It was raining slightly and the air felt real good. I've been smelling cigarette smoke all day. Makes me sick!
That's all for now. Take care everyone.
