April 27, 2012-Misc

I talked to Jane yesterday. She was at the hotel in Portsmouth, NH, waiting for Jimmy and Patty to arrive. It takes about four hours to get there. Jane told me that the brewery was paying all expenses for anyone that came for the funeral. Not the plane fares but the hotel. And it was the Hampton where they all were staying. jane said it was very nice. The funeral was all paid for also and they are ven paying Alysha's rent. The brewery is devasted over this accident too. They've never had anything happen like that before. And Ben had worked there for 8 years. The Memorial Service was held at the brewery restaurant this morning and they had all the food for everyone afterward.
I haven't heard from Jane today. She said she wanted to try and get a flight out by tonight so she could get back to Myrtle Beach with her husband..
Faith will fly back to NC on Tuesday. Not sure how long Steve was staying. Everything is hectic for now but when Alysha is all alone again that is when it will be the hardest for her. But thank heavens she has a lot of friends there now. She has a lot of support from all her co-workers.
It was a very cold, rainy day here today. Never got out of the 30's. There was snow in the air too! And very windy. I was watching those trees swaying and I get worried for all the baby squirrels that are still in their nests and the baby birds. Guess the hawk caught a Bluejay today. I saw a bunch of feathers out there. Poor thing.
I saw both of the foxes after dark the night before last. That made me happy. But if they are a pair and they were both out then maybe there's no babies this year. Usually the female stays with the babies while the male goes out for the food. But time will tell. If there are any babies I won't see them till June.

PORTSMOUTH — A brewery worker died from injuries received during an explosion of a beer keg Tuesday morning at Redhook Ale Brewery.

The employee has been identified as Newington resident Ben Harris. Hospital spokeswoman Nancy Notis confirmed late Tuesday night that Harris died from his injuries.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Achilles said the brewery employee had been pressurizing a keg by filling it with air as part of a cleaning process to remove residual beer.

"The keg failed and exploded, and he was injured by parts of the keg," Achilles said.

Andy Thomas, vice president of Redhook's commercial operations, said the Redhook organization is "saddened by the tragic event that occurred at the Portsmouth brewery this morning, resulting in the death of one of our employees."

"Our deepest sympathies go out to his family," Thomas said. "We are doing everything in our power to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident and have closed down all non-essential operations at the Portsmouth brewery, including the pub, while the investigation continues."

Firefighters were dispatched to the brewery at 1 Redhook Way at Pease International Tradeport, at 7:06 a.m. for an initial report of a beer keg explosion that seriously injured a brewery worker, Achilles said. Engine 3 was first on scene, and firefighters found Harris unresponsive, with a weak pulse, and located in an area with kegs, bottles and conveyor belts, Achilles said.

Emergency medical technicians then arrived by ambulance from Station 2 and found Harris in cardiac arrest, with chest and head injuries, Achilles said. He was taken by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Achilles said the Fire Department notified the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and it was his understanding that Redhook management is being "very cooperative."

Redhook spokesman Ted Lane said the "hearts" of brewery managers "go out to (Harris') family members." He said Redhook is conducting its own investigation to determine the cause of the fatal accident. Thomas said it was inappropriate to comment further until Redhook's investigation is complete.

"Our sympathy is with his family and everyone touched by the tragedy," Thomas said.

Police Lt. Russell Russo said local officers were dispatched to the brewery for an initial police investigation. Federal officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were also dispatched to the brewery because the accident occurred at an alcohol-related facility.

Charles McMahon contributed to this report.

April 24, 2012-Sad News In Family

My niece, Alysha, lives in NH. She got married on March 29, 2012 and is expecting a baby in late Nov. She and her husband, Ben, both work at the Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth, NH. She works in the restaurant area and he works in the factory end. Alysha has been visiting her sister, Faith in NC for the past week. Her Co-workers changed days just so she could go visit her family and see her Aunt Prudy. This morning her husband went to work as usual and was cleaning a beer keg and it exploded and he got hit in the chest and face area. He never recovered. My brother, Steve, called my sister, Jane and then she called me at 10:30 this morning. Steve was trying to get a ride to NH to be there when Alysha got home. She was flying in to Boston and then taking a bus to her home in NH. All alone.
Steve must have called his girlfriend at work and hopefully she drove him. Jane is down in Myrtle Beach right now on vacation. I haven't heard anything else but did get a note from Faith, Alysha's sister in NC and they are flying up there tomorrow to be with Alysha. That's all I know for now. Here is the link to the news article.

I watched Jessi and Salena tonight. This is the last night I'll be watching them. Nina is taking them with her next week because it's her last day and won't be there long.
Everything else is about the same with me. I just wanted my family to know what happened.
Take care everyone.

April 19, 2012-Salena And Jessi

I got to watch both girls on Tuesday. Salena had banged herself up a lot falling off an electric scooter. She can't play soccer or volley ball right now till she heals up. Poor kid. Seems she's always having bad luck. But the scrapes should heal fast. I enjoyed having them both. I seldom get to talk to Salena. I'm adding the pictures from that day.
I saw the woodchuck for the first time Tuesday morning! The poor thing sure has a lot of scars on her. But she remembered me and came running when I called her so she could eat some nuts.
The weather has been nice. This morning the sky is so blue but only in the 30's. Getting up to 70 later though. I love this time of year! The trees are getting green fast now. I haven't seen any baby critters but I am keeping an eye on a squirrel and her nest, hoping to see some action around it soon.
Nothing much else happening right now. I am waiting for my new samples to arrive. But I haven't been itching as much around my ostomy. So far this one is on for three days!! Yaaaayyy!
Got to get moving. The birds are calling me.. Have a nice day everyone.

April 16, 2012-Hot Today

Today was too warm for me. And a little humid also. I think it reached 86 degrees. I had to keep my drapes closed all afternoon because the sun shines in those windows. It does keep the heat out anyway. By tomorrow it will be back to 60. I think it's going to rain tonight. the clouds are moving in at 8 pm.
I had to change my flange last night. It ended up coming unstuck. My belly wasn't as raw but by the time I get done cleaning it it's all red and itchy again.
I called the company today and told them what was happening. They are sending me new samples that don't have any tape on them. Then I called my pharmacy to get more barrier wipes. They delivered those this evening so I'm all set. It cost me $25 for 100 of them. I could have had my doctor write a prescription but then I wouldn't have gotten them as fast and I didn't have any at all. I can't wait for the samples to come. I sure hope they work. These flanges don't last long when I use that barrier though. Even though it says you can it's still better when you have direct skin contact with those flanges. I want to get all healed so they will last 6 or 7 days again. I don't like this changing every two days. It's hard on my skin.
Tomorrow afternoon I'll be watching Jessi again. I think Nina has three more weeks before she's done teaching that class. She'll be happy. She said it's too tiring to teach three nights a week. She teaches the other two nights at a different college closer by. That's why I don't watch Jessi on those nights. Nina is back home by 6. And Jessi has soccer now so her grandfather picks her up I guess. Or Nina's sister.
My legs and back were much better today. It usually takes two days for them to get back to somewhat normal after shopping.
So that's all for now. Take care everyone. Have a nice week, wherever you all are!

April 15, 2012-I Got Out Last Night

I finally got myself out of this apartment last night. Went to Walmart to get groceries. It was almost 10 pm when I got home. But I didn't leave till 8. I had to make two trips in with my cart. Today I'm paying for it. My back hurts and my legs can hardly get around today. So I am going to try and stay off them as much as I can .
I ended up going back to my original flange and bag. I've had this one on for two and a half days and the itching wasn't bad but I can feel it starting a bit today. I try and not itch. Otherwise it makes it worse. I'm on a new box of flanges so maybe this batch won't bother me as much. But I am going to make sure I use the barrier wipes before I put the flanges on. It leaves a film to protect the skin and help it heal. I think that it wears off and that's why I am feeling the itch a bit. I wish I had remembered to look for some of that stuff last night but I forgot. Guess I'll have to have my pharmacy deliver some.
It was nice here yesterday but today it's gloomy and in the 60's. It started raining last night around 11 pm. Not raining yet today though. Tomorrow it's going to be humid and in the 80's! Yuck. I'm glad it's not going to stay. The cooler air comes back by Tuesday. I just can't handle hot weather.
I finally chopped my hair off Thursday night and colored it for the first time in a year. But it's too dark now but I don't care. I was sick of it going flat and always having to tie it back. Now I can just wash it and finger dry it again. I never should have let it grow. It is hard to get my arms up to cut though. Now I will just have to keep it up. I've only been to hair dresser three times in my life and have always cut my own hair. Everytime I went they screwed it up worse than I ever would have . Of course now days I don't much care how it looks since I am always inside and hardly ever go anywhere. I recall the days when I wouldn't walk out of the house without my pantyhose or earrings on..LOL I haven't worn pantyhose in 15 years and never wear earrings unless on Christmas sometimes. It's so nice to be "free" of all that stuff. I do put on a bit of lipstick when I leave the house but that's all. Very seldom do I ever even put on mascara. I never did wear makeup. Just mascara and lipstick. Guess I'm "old'..ha!
Hope you all are having a nice weekend. Take care.

April 11, 2012-Watched Jessi Last Evening

Nina brought Jessi over even though she wasn't going to class last night. She wanted to go shopping and it's easier if Jessi isn't with her. She had Jordan with her also. He came in to say Hi and they stayed a few minutes. Jordan had hurt his hip not too long ago and he never saw a doctor. Guess his father didn't think he needed one. I told Nina she should at least have it looked at because Jordan says it still hurts a little but he is still playing Baseball. Nina is going to take him to the doctor this week and have it checked.
I had Nina pick me up a few items at the store, as long as she was going anyway. That way I won't have to go out for a few more days.
The Convatec Synergy flange and bag I put on yesterday is still holding up and I'm not itching as bad. I changed the bag and so far it's holding up okay. The air is staying in this one. I might have to change the flange tomorrow though because I can feel a light sting which means it's leaking a little near the stoma itself. I only have one more flange though so will have to go back to the ones I was using. Hopefully the redness will have subsided. I'm going to open a different box. Maybe the newer ones will be better.
I've been reading online forums and quite a few people have had problems with the glue sticking with the ones I have on now. I might call the company and tell them what is happening so they can at least have it on record. If they think it is their problem they might send me a new box of flanges.
It was another gloomy day today. It rained a few times and one time it even hailed. That was weird. It came down pretty heavy and covered the ground too. Real small hail. The weather is going to be nicer tomorrow and Friday.
Jane called me today. Jimmy told her that Jeanne's son, Ricky, has moved back to CO. I'm glad because he sure wasn't going anywhere here in NY. I guess he got a job right away also. He's been on a rant for the past few months and very depressed so being back there might help him get his act together. He lived out there for quite a few years and was a massage therapist. But he couldn't do it in NY because he didn't have a license.
Alysha, Steve's daughter, got married as I said in another post. I guess she's having another ceremony on June 2nd out there in NH where she lives. Jane and Jim will be going. We haven't gotten the invitations yet. Of course I can't go but I'll send her a card.
Jeanne's daughter, Jessica, is selling her jewelry on Etsy. She has made quite a few things. She shows them on Facebook also. I haven't heard anything from Jeanne. I'm surprised she didn't call to tell me that Rick had moved back to CO.
Jim and Patty had a good time out in CO visiting Matthew for his 30th birthday. But poor Jim ended up helping him build a deck. Not much of a vacation. But I'm sure Jim didn't mind. After all, it's his son.. I wish Matt would post some photos on Facebook but he hasn't been doing much of that lately.
I guess that's all I can think of for now.
Take care everyone.

April 10, 2012-Grrrr! New Bag Didn't Work

I changed my flange and bag this morning at 8 am to the new sample one I received from the Cymed Company. At first it was very comfortable. I'd say the most comfortable I've ever tried. But it pancaked too much and ended up going under the barrier. I even thought my redness was clearing up but by the time I changed that one at noon my belly was awful red and itchy again. So now I have Convatec's Synergy flange and bag on. They were samples also that I never tried. It is now after 3 pm and it's holding but I'm having a problem with air going out of it. You see, I have an inverted stoma so I need a little air bubble. I can't have it pancaking or it won't go up and over the ridge inside the bag and will end up ruining the seal. I will have to go through the evening with it till the kids are gone tonight. I found a few barrier wipes and put that stuff on before I stuck the flange on. It's supposed to provide a protective shield so your skin can heal. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Meanwhile I'm still very uncomfortable.
Thanks Dee, Linda and Jan for your concern. I have been doing very well with these things and hadn't changed a thing till this itching started. That's why I think it's the glue and they might have changed it somehow.
I'll be back later maybe.

April 9, 2012-Cooler Weather Here

After having a few very nice days it's back to cloudy, damp and gloomy weather today. Much cooler also. Only in the low 40's today.
I got my Ostomy samples in the mail so I will be trying those out tonight. I put one of my old samples from NUHope on the other day and it's been staying on but I really don't like the bag. I don't like emptying a bag and cleaning it. I am so used to the closed end ones now. I also got out some samples I forgot about, from Convatec, that I will try also. The trouble is I probably won't be able to get any till my prescription runs out. Medicare has already paid for a month's supply. I'll see what happens as I go along. The itching is still there but not as bad. Odd thing though. The opposite side of my belly started itching today and that was driving me crazy. I've tried baking soda paste and With Hazel. I think the Witch Hazel works a little better. I haven't gotten out to pick up anything else yet. Maybe I should get some antihistamine also. I better be careful though. I think I was allergic to that stuff when I was in the hospital. I broke out terrible from it.
I am going to try and get out sometime this week. Maybe Wednesday. I have to watch Jessi tomorrow so won't be going on Tuesday. All depends on the weather also.
My knee is bothering me today. Just from taking my garbage down tot he trash room and going out to my trunk to get something last night.
The lump in my side is bothering me a bit more also. But that comes and goes. I can handle that.
Well. Guess I'll get off this computer for now. I've been trying to catch up on things.
Take care everyone.

April 6, 2012-Having A Terrible Time With Ostomy

For over a week now I've been having a hard time keeping my flanges on. I am all irritated. It's so bad and bugs me so much. The itching is driving me nuts. I've had to change it four times in the past few days. Twice today! Because of all the irritation on my skin it's not sticking well. I think I'm allergic to the tape around the flange. It has always itched a little but has gotten much worse the past month. They must have changed the glue on them or something. I put a different company's one piece on this evening. So far it's holding up. It has no tape around the barrier and is soft. I have also sent for samples from a different company. From what I've been reading, a lot of people have good luck with them. So if they work I'll have to get new subscriptions from my doctor.
I haven't had this much of a problem for at least a year. And I've changed nothing. So it's either the glue or my body chemistry is changing. I'm all broke out from about 4 to 5 inches all around the stoma area.. It was bleeding bad. And taking those flanges off every day isn't helping any. My skin gets pulled and more irritated.
I've read that Gold Bond gets rid of the irritation faster. Haven't bought any of that yet. I am going to get some wipes from the druggist first. They leave a thin barrier on the skin so it can heal.
I'm hoping this new one will stick through the night.
I got some good pictures of the moon last night but tonight is the full moon. There are more clouds out there tonight though. I guess I'll see how it looks around 1 or 2 am. I'll probably be awake anyway. Last night I got up at 3 am and looked out and the moon was so bright and clear. I didn't feel like opening the window and taking pictures though.
Looks like it's going to be a beautiful weekend here. Then turn cooler and rainy on Monday and through next week.
I hope you all have a very nice weekend, wherever you are and a wonderful Easter. Take care.

April 5, 2012-Wow! How Time Flies!

I can't believe it's April 5th already. I haven't had time to get here. Seems I've been busy more.
I watched Jessi Tuesday evening. Nina and Salena came to pick her up around 8:30 but they stayed for a few minutes to talk. It was close to 9:00 when they left. I was tired. Nina was telling me about her father having a TIA but that it cleared up fast. Then she starts telling me about an episode she had over a week ago. She said she had felt funny all that day and when she got home something happened and her Peripheral vision was gone and she couldn't think straight. She said she didn't even know what a table was. It lasted for about an hour she said. She never went to a doctor and I told her to get to one fast. That is so scary and nothing to mess with. It might be leading to a big stroke. Now I'm so worried about her. She said she still finds herself doing weird things and even that day on her way over here she said she stopped for a stop sign and then a few seconds later realized there was none there. She said she was sure glad no one was behind her. I sure hope she sees a doctor quick. If something happens to her those poor kids will be devastated. Salena will have to go live with her dad and poor Jessi won't have anywhere to go except maybe to Nina's half sister, Crissy's.
I don't dare even ask Nina to pick me up things now. It's better that she don't lift things for a while.
It was my little brother, Rick's, 55th birthday yesterday. All the "little kids" as I always called them are all getting old! Yikes. I'm wondering if I'll live to see the baby turn 50 next year. That's way too far away and with this lump growing and my insides starting to bother me a little I'm not sure how long I will be here. That's why I'm just happy to wake up each day. No one can think about the future. It's promised to no one.
My brother, Jim, and his wife, patty, flew out to CO to surprise their son, Matt, for his 30th birthday. Matthew was happy and said they had a great time. It's also Jim and Pat's 39th anniversary on the 7th. The only ones who have stayed together for so long.
I went out yesterday afternoon to get a few items at Walmart and my critter food at Aubuchon. It was nice but so windy. But I didn't mind getting wind blown..Ha!
Last evening, just at sundown, the sky was a real weird color. I looked out and it was raining and then when I looked in the back I saw a beautiful double rainbow! I wish it hadn't been so dark because my photos didn't come out that good. I sure wished I had been out on the hill or something. What an awesome view that would have been. But as rainbows go, it didn't last long. A girl from Ilion said it hailed after the rain also. I didn't notice any here.
Today I'm just going to relax so my knee will feel better. Everytime I go out it hurts more the next day.
Oh. Jane made it to her show and broke even she said. But her computer broke down for two hours. She said she was lucky that there was a woman there that knew what to do. Now I guess she's going to continue doing those shows. One guy has quit so that means she will get his people and do bigger shows. But she wants a new camera now..Ha! She spends so much money on her stuff. The program alone that she uses cost her $10,000 !!! Can you imagine!! Yes, that's TEN THOUSAND! She said she wants to continue in case she can't do her massage healing any more .
Her shoulders and hands do bother her more each year from that. I can't believe the people that want to see their Aura photos and will pay good money.
Did I mention that Alysha got married? I think I did in the last post. Hope it lasts.
I have to go for now. Have a nice day everyone. And have a nice Easter!
